Once upon a time, DJ’s crowded record stores searching through the latest delivery of freshly distributed music on Vinyl. This was the pass time that made them most happy. In record shops, both DJ’s & music lovers found hours of joy searching for the music which they loved so dearly.

Recent years have seen a severe decline in vinyl sales, many record labels have stopped pressing vinyl with the upsurge of online sales. Illegal downloads also account for the decline of the record shop.

A recent example is the closing of Dublin landmark record shop COMET RECORDS, owner Brian O’Kelly told the Irish Times newspaper in a recent article that the fate of record shops are sealed.
“There is a whole generation who have never paid anything for music and I don’t know if they will ever be prepared to pay anything for music.”

Comet Records will re-open as a speciality online record store, selling rare & collectible vinyl & while that site is being built he is selling off his stock for 4 Euro. Comet Records was the latest in a wave of record store closings here in Ireland. This marks the end of an era for music lovers everywhere.

Last year Richard Branson who sold his chain of Virgin music stores in 2007 claimed the last record store will close in 2020.

Sadly the music store is something of the past. There may be one or two specialist stores that will survive for a few more years. But if you turn the clock forward ten years from now, I’d be surprised if there are any more music stores left in the world.

DJ’s are truly loosing their most treasured items, the record, a piece of vinyl which carries a wonderful piece of music history. Records cannot be replaced by a digital file in our opinion & while we utilise all the current DJ media in the Young DJ Academy, we think records are best.

Here in Dublin, there are still some who believe in records sales. Bodytonicmusic are holding a special event on April 16th http://www.bodytonicmusic.com/events/pogo/2011/mar/22/pogo-record-store-day-w-earwiggle-discotekken-quarter-inch-collective-more/

Record Store Day is celebrated globally, check it out here http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

If you want to find records in Dublin, you can still do so in places like spin dizzy records who have a store in George’s arcade Mall or Tower Records on Wicklow St.

There are many online stores which still stock vinyl. Check out http://www.juno.co.uk/ to see how the online store works.
